Slab thickness is often the smallest dimension on a sketch, but it applies across the full area. For a 10 × 10 ft slab, increasing thickness from 4 in to 5 in raises volume by 25 percent. That makes thickness one of the most important inputs to verify before ordering concrete.
How to measure or choose the starting value
Measure slab length and width at the planned form dimensions. Convert thickness to the same unit system before multiplying: inches to feet in US calculations or millimeters/centimeters to meters in metric calculations. If the slab has thickened edges or grade beams, calculate those extra shapes separately rather than treating the entire slab as one uniform thickness.
Adjustments that change the estimate
Excavation tolerance, base preparation, slope, thickened edges and uneven subgrade can increase real placed volume. Structural loads, soil conditions, reinforcement and code can affect required thickness, but those design issues are outside a general material-volume estimate.
