Measure the clear opening, not the combined railing perimeter
Posts create hard boundaries. Measure from finished inside post face to finished inside post face for each level bay. If several bays are truly identical, solve one and repeat it; if they differ, solve each independently before adding quantities.
Use actual baluster face width
Nominal size, profile or sleeve description may not equal the installed face width that occupies the bay. Measure or use the actual product dimension relevant to the infill plane.
Enter the approved maximum opening
The calculator deliberately does not choose a safety-compliant gap. Use the maximum clear opening established by the selected railing design, project requirements and applicable rules, then let the arithmetic choose enough balusters to stay at or below it.
Equalize both end gaps and interior gaps
With N balusters there are N+1 equal spaces when the first and last balusters are not flush to the posts. Subtract total baluster width from the clear bay and divide the remaining opening by N+1. This gives an auditable equal-gap layout rather than an approximate repeating module.
Keep purchase spare separate from geometry
Solve the exact installed count first. Apply a spare percentage only afterward and round the purchase quantity up. Spare balusters do not change the center pitch or installed marks.

Frequently asked questions
Why did the old total-run method differ from this result?
A total-run approximation can let rounding pass through post boundaries. Each clear post bay closes independently, so per-bay equal spacing is more auditable.
Does the tool choose the maximum baluster gap?
No. Enter the project-approved maximum. The tool only solves the minimum whole count and exact equal spacing within that constraint.
What if my bays are different widths?
Calculate each different clear bay separately and add the installed/purchase quantities afterward.
Do I include posts in the baluster count?
No. Posts are the bay boundaries. Use the railing-post spacing tool when laying out post centers.
