How to Measure a Shower Pan for Deck Mud

A deck-mud estimate is only as good as the bed geometry that feeds it. The key is to measure one mortar layer at a time, keep plan area separate from thickness, and describe a sloped bed with an average compacted thickness or smaller measured zones rather than a single maximum edge depth.

Define the exact mortar layer first

Traditional and bonded shower assemblies can place mortar in different locations and sequences. Do not treat every shower as having the same number of mud beds. Label the layer you are measuring, such as a pre-slope or a final mortar bed, according to the selected system.

Measure the pan footprint at the mortar plane

For a simple rectangular pan, measure inside length and width at the bed footprint. Curbs, benches, recesses and offsets can change the net shape; add or subtract those as explicit zones rather than hiding them inside waste.

Keep wall tile area out of the bed quantity

Shower Tile Calculator measures finish tile on walls and floor. Deck Mud Calculator measures compacted mortar volume below a floor finish. The floor plan area may be related, but wall surfaces and box coverage do not belong in the deck-mud volume.

Treat slope as geometry, not waste

A sloped bed has real material volume. Do not replace that geometry with a large waste factor. Establish an average compacted thickness from the selected system/plan or split the footprint into zones whose thicknesses can be averaged more defensibly.

Record the product after measuring the geometry

Once compacted volume is known, read the current technical data for the exact deck-mud or sand-mix product. The calculator's example yield is deliberately editable because manufacturer yields differ.

Dry-run the quantity before installation

Check that the entered area, thickness and bag yield describe the same layer and product. Then compare the result against manufacturer coverage examples or supplier guidance before purchase.

Separate two layers instead of blending assumptions

If a project genuinely uses two mortar-bed layers, measure the footprint once but calculate each layer with its own average compacted thickness. Add the two compacted volumes only after each layer has been reviewed. This keeps a change to one layer from silently changing the other.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include the shower curb?

Only if the curb is being built with the same mortar product and you measure its volume separately. Do not add an arbitrary curb allowance.

What if the drain is off center?

Do not assume a centered-drain average. Use project geometry or split the pan into defensible zones; the calculator accepts known area and average thickness rather than inventing drain geometry.

Can the tile floor square footage be reused?

It can be a useful footprint cross-check if it represents the same net pan area, but tile waste and wall surfaces must not be carried into the mortar-bed volume.
