Assumptions & notes

Deck mud is estimated by compacted volume. For a sloped shower pan, enter an average compacted thickness for the specific mortar-bed layer you are estimating rather than the maximum perimeter thickness alone.
The 0.45 ft³ starting yield is only an editable example corresponding to one published 60 lb sand-mix product. QUIKRETE Deck Mud publishes approximately 0.41 ft³ for its 50 lb bag and 0.62 ft³ for its 75 lb bag, while other products publish different yields or coverage. Replace the field with the current data-sheet value for the exact product in hand.
Traditional liner, bonded waterproofing, uncoupling, drain, reinforcement, cleavage membrane, substrate preparation and slope requirements are assembly decisions outside this quantity calculator. Do not combine two separate mortar-bed layers unless both layers have been measured and intentionally added.
Do not use concrete-mix bag yields as a substitute for deck-mud or sand-mix yield unless the selected product data explicitly supports that application and yield.

How to measure this project

Measure the inside plan footprint of the mortar bed at the layer being placed. For a simple rectangular pan, record length and width; for a shape already broken into zones, total the net square footage first and use known-area mode. Thickness is the compacted average across that specific layer. A sloped bed is not represented by its perimeter thickness alone, and a two-stage shower assembly should be measured as two separate layers unless you have intentionally calculated a combined average volume.

Before you buy materials

Buy from the volume-to-yield conversion, not from bag weight alone. Two 60 lb products can publish different usable yields because formulation and intended application differ. Replace the example yield with the current technical data for the exact bag being purchased, keep placement/handling allowance explicit, and do not infer waterproofing, slope, cure, bonding, reinforcement or substrate requirements from the bag count.

Supports: QUIKRETE identifies Deck Mud as a Portland-cement-and-sand underlayment mortar and publishes approximate yields of 0.41 ft³ for a 50 lb bag and 0.62 ft³ for a 75 lb bag.

Boundary: Those yields are product- and package-specific. HomeMeasureLab does not convert bag weight into a universal deck-mud yield or infer shower-system requirements.

Sakrete — Sand Mix

Supports: Sakrete lists Sand Mix for applications including shower pans and publishes approximate yields including 0.30 ft³ for 40 lb, 0.45 ft³ for 60 lb and 0.60 ft³ for 80 lb packages.

Boundary: The 0.45 ft³ value is used only as an editable starting example. The selected product label/technical data and project requirements control actual application and yield.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet does one bag of deck mud cover?

Coverage depends on both the bag's published yield and the compacted bed thickness. A volume yield has no single square-foot coverage until thickness is specified.

Should I enter the thickness at the shower drain or at the wall?

For a sloped layer, enter a defensible average compacted thickness for that layer, not only the minimum or maximum point. If the geometry is complex, calculate zones separately.

Is deck mud the same as concrete mix?

No. This calculator is for deck mud, floor mud, sand mix or a specified mortar-bed product. Use the yield and application data for the exact selected product rather than borrowing a concrete-mix yield.

Does this calculate shower slope or waterproofing?

No. It estimates quantity after the bed geometry and assembly requirements are selected. Drainage slope, waterproofing, membranes, bonding and reinforcement remain project/system requirements.

Can I add a pre-slope and final mud bed together?

Yes only after measuring each layer intentionally. Running each layer separately is usually clearer because the geometry and average thickness can differ.
