Deck Mud Coverage: Square Feet, Thickness & Bag Yield

Deck-mud coverage is a volume problem. Square footage tells you the footprint, but the bed thickness turns that area into cubic feet. Only after the compacted volume is known should you divide by the published yield of the exact deck-mud, floor-mud or sand-mix product being purchased.

Quick answerMultiply mortar-bed square footage by average compacted thickness in inches and divide by 12 to get cubic feet. Add an explicit handling/placement allowance, then divide by the current published yield per bag and round up once. Bag weight alone does not determine coverage, and a sloped shower bed needs a defensible average thickness rather than only its wall or drain thickness.

Square feet alone cannot determine bag count

The same 15 sq ft shower footprint needs twice as much compacted mortar at 2 in average thickness as it does at 1 in. Any chart or calculator that asks only for square feet must be assuming a thickness somewhere; keep that assumption visible.

Convert thickness to feet before multiplying

For US units, compacted cubic feet = square feet × thickness in inches ÷ 12. A 15 sq ft bed at 1.5 in average thickness therefore contains 1.875 ft³ before any explicit allowance.

Use average thickness for a sloped layer

A shower pan that changes thickness across the footprint cannot be represented by its maximum edge thickness alone. Use an average compacted thickness supported by the geometry or split the pan into smaller zones. If the assembly has separate pre-slope and final mortar beds, keep those volumes separate until the end.

Product yield is the purchasing bridge

QUIKRETE Deck Mud publishes approximate yields of 0.41 ft³ for a 50 lb bag and 0.62 ft³ for a 75 lb bag. Sakrete publishes 0.45 ft³ for a 60 lb Sand Mix bag. Those examples demonstrate why product data controls the conversion; HomeMeasureLab does not convert bag weight into a universal yield.

Coverage tables are thickness-specific

MAPEI 4 to 1 Mud Bed Mix publishes approximate square-foot coverage at stated thicknesses. That is useful as a product cross-check, but the calculator remains product-neutral by asking you for the current bag yield rather than silently applying one manufacturer's coverage to another product.

Round only at the sold-bag boundary

Keep area, thickness, base volume and allowance as decimal values. Divide the final order volume by the selected bag yield and round up once to whole bags. Early rounding compounds error, especially on small shower pans.

15 sq ft at 1.5 in

15 × 1.5 ÷ 12 = 1.875 ft³ compacted volume. With a 10% explicit allowance, the planning volume is 2.0625 ft³. If the selected product data says 0.45 ft³ per bag, 2.0625 ÷ 0.45 = 4.58, so plan five whole bags.

Frequently asked questions

Why do deck-mud coverage charts disagree?

They may assume different bed thicknesses, bag sizes, products, yields or allowance. Compare the underlying product yield and thickness before comparing bag counts.

Can I use 0.45 ft³ for every 60 lb bag?

No. It is a published value for a specific product example, not a universal weight-to-volume conversion.

What if my shower has a bench or irregular footprint?

Break the bed into measured zones or calculate the net plan area separately, then use known-area mode.
