Define one vertical field before doing arithmetic
Start with the exact height the repeated courses must fill. The lower boundary may be a project-specific starter datum and the upper boundary may be a soffit, frieze, trim line or another termination defined by the selected system. Do not average together stepped foundations, varying top lines or separate architectural bands. If two wall sections need aligned courses but have different physical heights, record both heights and decide which datum must remain continuous before solving each field.
Get exposure from the governing product information
Exposure, also called reveal, is not simply the nominal board width. Overlap, interlocking geometry and manufacturer limitations determine how much vertical height each course can visibly advance. LP SmartSide instructions, for example, specify minimum overlap for its lap-siding product and instruct users to follow the current product instructions and local requirements. Treat the exposure value as an external project/product input rather than a hidden universal default.
Use a whole course count to eliminate the closing sliver
If the measured field does not divide evenly by the maximum selected exposure, repeatedly using that maximum leaves a remainder at the top. The even-course method takes the ceiling of field height divided by maximum exposure, then divides the full field by that whole course count. The solved reveal is therefore equal on every course and cannot exceed the entered maximum in auto mode. This is a geometry choice, not permission to ignore product-specific minimums or other installation constraints.
Transfer cumulative marks from one level datum
A repeated layout is easier to audit when every position is measured from the same origin. Establish the lower datum carefully, verify it is level across the field, then mark cumulative distances: one reveal, two reveals, three reveals and so on. Measuring each next course only from the previous board lets small marking errors accumulate. Keep course marks separate from fastening details
The calculator's marks are horizontal reference positions, not nail lines. Fastener placement, penetration, joint treatment, starter details, clearances, flashing and required overlaps are governed by the selected siding product and project conditions. A clean coursing result should make those boundaries more visible, not hide them behind a generic installation claim.
Move to quantity takeoff only after the layout is understood
Course count alone cannot tell you how many planks, panels or packages to purchase because wall width, openings, stock lengths, butt-joint staggering and offcut reuse still matter. Example: a 108-inch field
With a user-entered maximum exposure of 7 inches, 108 ÷ 7 is 15.43, so auto-even planning uses 16 whole courses. Equal reveal is 6.75 inches. Marks at 6.75, 13.5, 20.25 inches and so on all originate from the same datum, and the final course closes at 108 inches.

Does even coursing mean the exposure can be any value?
No. The solved reveal still has to be acceptable for the exact siding product and project. Auto mode only guarantees it does not exceed the maximum value you entered.
Should every elevation use the same field height?
Only when the physical datum and termination truly align. Stepped or differently terminated elevations should be measured separately.
Why measure marks from one datum?
Cumulative references reduce compounded layout error and make the closing dimension easier to verify.
Does this plan starter strip or flashing?
