A datum is the origin for every repeated course
The arithmetic assumes every course is referenced to the same zero point. On a real elevation, choose the lower control line required by the project and selected siding system, then establish that line level across the field. LP installation guidance tells installers to begin from a level chalk line and starter condition. HomeMeasureLab does not choose the height of that line; it uses the field height measured from the line once the project has established it.
Cumulative marks prevent error from walking up the wall
Suppose the equal reveal is 6.75 inches. The useful references are 6.75, 13.50, 20.25, 27.00 inches and so forth measured from the original datum. If each course is instead measured 6.75 inches from the previous physical edge, a small placement or reading error can be repeated many times. Cumulative marks keep the calculation tied to the original coordinate system and make an intermediate course easy to recheck.
Verify the closing mark before trusting the sequence
The last cumulative mark should match the measured field height apart from displayed rounding. Recheck the physical top termination before beginning work, especially where walls are out of level or soffit/frieze lines vary. If the real closing height differs materially, solve that field again instead of forcing the original reveal into a different geometry.
Do not confuse the course reference with the plank edge or nail line
Different siding systems establish exposure and fastening in different ways. A cumulative course reference is only a geometric interval. The installer still has to translate that reference according to the exact manufacturer's starter, overlap, gauge and fastening instructions. The HomeMeasureLab result deliberately avoids drawing nail locations because doing so would imply a product-specific installation detail it does not own.
Use fixed-count mode as a field reverse check
Sometimes an existing elevation, adjacent facade or design decision already establishes the desired number of courses. Fixed-count mode divides the measured height by that count and compares the implied reveal with the entered maximum. A failed maximum-exposure check is a signal to revisit the field plan or product requirements, not an instruction to exceed them.
Record layout and quantity as linked but separate notes
The coursing sheet should record field height, datum, entered exposure limit, solved reveal and course count. The material takeoff should separately record wall widths/areas, openings, waste and package coverage. Keeping both records prevents a later supplier or product change from contaminating the original site measurement.

For a 6.75-inch equal reveal, the fourth reference is 27 inches from datum 0, not merely four successive hand-measured steps. If a mid-wall check at course 12 should be 81 inches, that direct datum measurement can expose drift immediately.

You can physically work that way, but cumulative control marks from one datum provide a stronger check against compounded error.
What if the soffit is not level?
Treat the real termination geometry as a field condition. A single equal-course rectangle cannot resolve a varying top line without a project-specific trim/layout decision.
Does a failed fixed-count check mean the siding cannot be used?
No. It means the implied reveal exceeds the maximum you entered. Review the course count, field height and exact product requirements.
Are course marks the top or bottom of each plank?
They are abstract spacing references. Translate them to the physical plank edge/gauge required by the exact siding system.
