Width is the missing dimension between length and area
A linear foot is one foot along a path regardless of the material width. Square feet includes both length and width. That is why there is no single conversion such as one linear foot equals a fixed number of square feet. The conversion changes whenever the installed coverage width changes.
Use actual coverage width instead of a product nickname
A board described by a nominal size may have a different physical width, and a lap or tongue-and-groove product may expose less width after installation. When the purpose is coverage, enter the width that actually contributes new covered area. If the purpose is face area of a full-width component, use the physical face width instead. Record which interpretation you used so the result can be audited.
Square feet to linear feet divides by width
Convert the coverage width to feet first. Then use linear feet = square feet ÷ width in feet. A 100 sq ft surface covered by a product with 5.5 in actual coverage needs 100 ÷ (5.5 ÷ 12), or about 218.18 linear ft before cuts, stock rounding or reserve.
Linear feet to square feet multiplies by width
When the measured or purchased length is already known, use square feet = linear feet × width in feet. This reverse conversion is useful when a supplier quotes a fixed-width product by length and you want to understand the nominal surface area represented by that quantity.
Keep exact conversion separate from purchase allowance
First establish the exact geometric conversion. Then add any project-specific cut, handling or spare allowance to the length used for purchasing. Separating those layers makes it clear whether extra material came from geometry or from a deliberate reserve.
Stock length creates a second rounding step
Even after the required linear footage is known, materials sold as 8 ft, 10 ft, 12 ft or other whole pieces require package-style rounding. Dividing total footage by stock length gives a conservative piece count, but a detailed cut plan may reuse offcuts and reduce the actual quantity.

Add allowance separately
Apply only the reserve chosen for cuts, damage, matching or handling after the exact footage is known.
Round to sold stock last
Use the supplier stock length and round up only when whole pieces are required.
100 linear ft at 5.5 in coverage equals about 45.83 sq ft
Convert 5.5 in to feet: 5.5 ÷ 12 = 0.45833 ft. Multiply 100 linear ft × 0.45833 ft = 45.833 sq ft. If the same material must cover 100 sq ft, reverse the equation: 100 ÷ 0.45833 = about 218.18 linear ft. These are exact geometry references before allowance or stock-piece rounding.

How many square feet are in one linear foot?
There is no fixed answer. Multiply one linear foot by the material width in feet. A 6 in wide strip represents 0.5 sq ft per linear foot; a 12 in wide strip represents 1 sq ft per linear foot.
Can I convert square feet to linear feet without width?
No. Many different widths can cover the same area using different lengths, so width is required for a unique conversion.
Should I use nominal lumber width?
Use the dimension that matches the question. For surface coverage, use actual installed or exposed coverage width; for another purpose, document the physical dimension being modeled.
Does the conversion include waste?
