Start with cover at the outside crown
The calculator treats cover as the vertical distance from finished grade or another governing reference surface to the outside top of the pipe. This keeps the geometry separate from whatever source established the required cover.
Centerline is an OD-based offset
For a round pipe, the centerline lies one-half of the actual outside diameter below the outside crown. Nominal pipe size is not a reliable substitute when the selected product publishes a different OD.
Outside bottom is not the invert
The outside bottom is one full OD below the crown. The invert is the inside bottom or flowline, so wall thickness or a project-recorded invert elevation is required to connect the two. Corrugated, lined or nonuniform profiles may need project/manufacturer geometry instead of a simple wall-thickness subtraction.
Trench floor continues through bedding
A trench-floor depth includes the cover to crown, the pipe OD and the bedding below the pipe. Pipe-zone surround, haunching or backfill above the pipe are different material zones and should not be folded into this vertical datum arithmetic.
Repeat the stack where grade changes
Finished grade and pipe profile can change along a run. Check meaningful stations or segments separately so a deep point does not hide a shallow point. Keep the same reference convention for every recorded depth.
Use project requirements for acceptance
A geometry result is not a code lookup or structural design. Traffic loading, frost, pipe class, utility separation, bedding and local requirements can change what cover or installation is acceptable.

Use the same grade or project datum used by the governing cover requirement.
Record actual OD
Use selected-pipe outside diameter rather than assuming nominal size.
Keep crown, centerline and outside bottom distinct
They differ by OD-based vertical offsets.
Use wall/profile data only when deriving invert
Otherwise use the project-recorded invert directly.
Add bedding only for trench-floor depth
Do not mix full pipe-zone material into the bedding-below-pipe input.
24 in cover creates several different depth numbers
With 24 in cover over a 4 in OD circular pipe, the centerline is 26 in below the reference surface and the outside bottom is 28 in below it. If a verified 0.25 in wall thickness is applicable, a simple inside-invert depth is 27.75 in. With 6 in bedding below the pipe, the minimum geometric trench-floor depth is 34 in.

Why does trench depth exceed cover?

Does this guide provide minimum burial cover?
