How Solid Concrete Step Volume Is Estimated

A simple solid stair can be modeled as stacked rectangular prisms, producing width × rise × tread × n(n+1)/2 for n equal steps.

Visualize the stair as layers

The first tread has one rise layer, the second has two and so on. Adding 1 + 2 + … + n gives n(n+1)/2 layers.

Keep width, rise and tread consistent

The shortcut assumes every step has the same rise, tread and width. Flared or irregular stairs need a different takeoff.

Add landings as separate prisms

A landing is normally a rectangular slab/volume and should not be hidden in the staircase layer formula.

Quantity does not validate stair design

Rise/tread code, reinforcement, frost depth, formwork and structural requirements are outside the volume calculation.

Confirm that the solid-step model matches the form

The stacked-prism shortcut assumes concrete fills the full mass beneath each tread. Some stairs are formed over compacted fill, built with walls and a thinner structural slab, or supplied as precast units, so the actual concrete volume can be much smaller than a solid block. Review a section drawing or the intended formwork before using the formula. If there is a landing, foundation pad or thickened base, calculate it separately. Also record whether dimensions are finished tread/rise dimensions or form dimensions; finishes or nosings can make those values different from the concrete mass being placed. If the stair abuts a wall or existing slab, note whether that adjacent work changes the concrete shape or simply the form boundary. Photograph or sketch the cross-section before ordering so the volume assumption can be checked later.
