Measure the gross rectangular wall face and record doors, windows, bond beams and other openings separately. The nominal block face is useful for a first-pass count, but masonry modules include mortar joints and projects often require corner, half, bond-beam or other special units. Use plans when available.
Use the block count as a preliminary material quantity, not a complete masonry takeoff. Subtract meaningful openings only with care because cuts and special units can offset part of the apparent savings. Mortar, reinforcement, grout, lintels, caps, delivery and pallet quantities are separate from this block-only estimate.
