How to measure this project

Measure the actual slab footprint that receives aggregate base and record the compacted base thickness from the project section. If the slab has thickened edges, isolated pads or zones with a different base depth, calculate those zones separately instead of averaging them into one oversized layer. Keep excavation depth and subgrade removal separate because they are not automatically equal to the finished aggregate thickness.

Before you buy materials

Aggregate may be supplied by bulk volume, weight or small bags. This calculator preserves the geometric volume first, then converts to cubic yards and optional bag count. If the supplier sells by weight, use the supplier or material-specific bulk density rather than assuming a universal conversion. Compaction, moisture and placement can change delivered versus finished volume, so keep the allowance explicit and verify the project specification.

Frequently asked questions

Does this choose the correct gravel depth?

No. Enter the compacted base depth required by the actual project or specification.

Is excavation volume the same as base gravel volume?

Not necessarily. Excavation can include removed soil, slab thickness and other layers. This tool models only the entered aggregate base layer.

Can I use bags for a large slab?

The calculator can show a bag count for comparison, but bulk delivery is often more practical for larger volumes. Use the actual supplier unit.
