Project result

Your French-drain gravel volume

Compare gross trench volume with approximate pipe displacement, then see the allowance-adjusted gravel quantity.

When to use this calculator

You need aggregate volume for a French-drain trench after approximate pipe displacement.

Use a different calculator when

Use Gravel Calculator for a generic rectangular gravel layer without drain-pipe displacement.

Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Gross trench volume

length × width × filled depth

Rectangular gravel envelope.

Pipe displacement

π × (OD/2)² × length

Approximate straight-pipe occupied volume.

Net gravel volume

trench − pipe displacement

Does not subtract voids or fittings.

Purchase target

net × (1 + allowance)

Adds placement/order reserve.

How to measure this project

Measure the trench length along its route and the average width and depth of the portion that will actually contain aggregate. If the trench changes size, calculate each segment separately. Use pipe outside diameter for displacement because that is the physical volume that replaces gravel inside the trench envelope.

Before you buy materials

Aggregate volume is only one part of French-drain planning. Fabric overlap, pipe type, perforation orientation, bedding, cover depth, outlet elevation and discharge destination all need project-specific decisions. Bulk aggregate also settles and is sold by volume or weight with supplier-specific density, so confirm ordering units before delivery.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Should I subtract the pipe volume?

For a tighter aggregate estimate, yes; use the pipe outside diameter because that is the space physically occupied in the trench.

Does the calculator include soil cover?

Only if you include that depth in the gravel-filled depth, which you generally should not unless it is actually aggregate.

Can it size the drain for rainfall or groundwater?

No. Hydraulic capacity and outlet design require separate engineering or plumbing/landscape guidance.
