Measure pipe along the intended route, including vertical risers and drops that are part of the same material takeoff. Break the system into zones when pipe sizes or materials change. Do not use a point-to-point straight-line distance across walls or floors because real routing, offsets and vertical transitions create additional developed length.
Whole stock lengths are only a purchasing reference. Elbows, wyes, tees, couplings, cleanouts, traps, vents and transition fittings need their own count, and fitting insertion/socket depths can affect cut lengths. Pipe diameter, slope and venting must come from the project design and applicable plumbing requirements rather than from the linear-foot result.
