Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Measured floor area

length × width

Base layer footprint.

Allowance area

area × overlap %

Represents seams/cuts as a planning factor.

Roll coverage

roll width × roll length

Nominal full-roll area.

Rolls

ceil(target area ÷ roll coverage)

Whole-roll purchase rounding.

How to measure this project

Measure the full floor footprint that will receive underlayment and note obstructions or separate rooms. Enter the actual roll width and roll length. Read the installation instructions carefully because some products overlap, some butt together, and some incorporate vapor-control details that affect installation but are not represented by simple area math.

Before you buy materials

Use the allowance as a planning factor, then round to whole rolls. A long narrow room can consume rolls differently from a square room even when area is identical, so verify roll orientation and seam requirements before purchasing. This calculator estimates material quantity, not moisture-control suitability or installation compliance.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do all underlayments overlap?

No. Follow the product installation instructions; the allowance input can represent overlap, cuts or other planning loss.

Can I subtract cabinets?

Only subtract areas that definitely will not receive the underlayment according to the flooring installation plan.

Does this choose the right underlayment type?

No. It estimates quantity only; product compatibility and moisture requirements must be verified separately.
