    Long-wall drops

    2 × ceil(room length ÷ roll width)

    Each long wall rounds independently to whole vertical strips.

    Short-wall drops

    2 × ceil(room width ÷ roll width)

    Each short wall rounds independently; do not round one combined perimeter only.

    Matched cut length

    wall height + entered trim, rounded up to the next vertical repeat when repeat > 0

    With repeat = 0, cut length is wall height plus the trim allowance you entered.

    Drops per roll

    floor(roll length ÷ matched cut length)

    Only complete full-height drops count.

    Rolls

    ceil(total required drops ÷ drops per roll)

    Final purchase quantity rounds to whole physical rolls.

    How to measure this project

    Measure room length, room width and finished wall height at the surfaces that will actually receive wallpaper. This rectangular-room model treats the four walls separately for strip count: each wall width rounds up to whole roll-width drops before the totals are added. For an accent wall or a room with major unpapered sections, calculate the actual wall widths being covered rather than relying on a room perimeter shortcut.

    Before you buy materials

    Pattern matching remains product-specific. Enter the physical roll width and total roll length printed for the exact wallcovering, plus the vertical pattern repeat shown on its label or product information. Add only the top-and-bottom trim allowance selected for the project. Straight, drop and random matches can have different hanging sequences; this calculator uses the entered vertical repeat for cut-length yield and does not invent a universal match-type waste percentage. Keep run/dye-lot availability and installer-specific reserve separate from the geometry.

    Frequently asked questions

    Why does wall-by-wall rounding need more drops than perimeter ÷ roll width?

    Each wall ends at a corner, so a partial strip width on one wall cannot automatically be carried across the corner as the same full-height strip on the next wall. The calculator rounds each wall to whole drops first and then adds them.

    Does the calculator subtract windows and doors?

    Not automatically. Openings often still require full-height strips around or above/below them, and manufacturer/installer guidance varies. For a tighter estimate, model only the wall widths actually being papered when large sections are excluded.

    What should I enter for trim allowance?

    Use the top-and-bottom trimming allowance selected by the installer or product instructions. Zero is valid when you intentionally want to see the no-trim geometry; HomeMeasureLab does not impose one universal allowance.

    Does pattern match type change the result?

    The calculator uses the vertical repeat you enter to determine matched drop length. Straight, drop and random match describe how adjacent strips align and may change the hanging sequence, so follow the wallcovering instructions for match-specific cutting and reserve.

    What if the roll is shorter than one matched drop?

    The calculator flags that condition because a complete full-height drop cannot be cut from the entered roll length.
