Why this planning detail matters
Trim is a linear material. Using square footage can obscure the actual wall runs and openings. A perimeter-based estimate also helps you think about joints: long stock can reduce seams on long walls, while short pieces may create more offcuts. Keep net linear footage separate from the number of pieces purchased.
How to measure or choose the starting value
For a simple rectangle, calculate perimeter as 2 × (length + width). Subtract doorway widths only where baseboard will not cross the opening. For irregular rooms, measure wall by wall and add the runs. Include closets or alcoves if they receive the same trim. Record long uninterrupted walls because they can influence preferred stock length.
Adjustments that change the estimate
Inside/outside corners, scarf joints, defects and miter cuts create waste. Decorative profiles can also have orientation or matching concerns. Door casing is a separate trim category and should not be confused with baseboard. Very small offcuts may not be reusable even if their total length seems sufficient mathematically.
How to use the number before you buy
Add the chosen cutting allowance to net linear footage, divide by actual stock length and round pieces up. Then compare purchased linear footage with the target. If long stock lengths are difficult to transport or unavailable, rerun the count with the supplier’s available length rather than changing the room measurement.

Example: 44 ft perimeter with two 3 ft doors
Net baseboard run is 38 ft before waste. With a 10% cutting allowance, the target is 41.8 ft. Using 8 ft stock requires 6 pieces (48 ft purchased), while 12 ft stock requires 4 pieces (also 48 ft), but joint layout differs.

Should I subtract door widths from baseboard?
Yes where the baseboard stops at the door casing/opening and does not continue across it.
Is longer baseboard stock always better?
Not always. It can reduce joints but may cost more or be harder to transport; use available product lengths.
Does baseboard waste work like flooring waste?
Both are explicit allowances, but baseboard is linear footage while flooring is area coverage.
