Fence Panel and Post Spacing Guide

Panel count depends on the net fenced run divided by the actual panel span. Post count depends on the number of bays and how gates, corners and endpoints are framed.

Why this planning detail matters

Fence material planning is linear rather than area-based. The most important dimensions are total run, openings and bay span. A small change in panel width can change the rounded panel count across a long fence, so a generic 8 ft default should always be replaceable with the selected system’s specification.

How to measure or choose the starting value

Measure each straight fence segment and add them. Record gates separately because they remove some panelled run but may add gate posts or hardware. If the fence changes direction, note corners and endpoints. For panel systems, use actual nominal/installed panel span from the product or design.

Adjustments that change the estimate

Corner posts, gate posts, terminal posts, slopes and stepped panels can change post count. Custom cut panels may make a simple ceiling division conservative or may require additional framing. Post spacing is also a structural/design choice that must follow the fence system and local requirements.

The panelled run is 96 ft. With an 8 ft panel span, that is 12 panel bays exactly. A simple straight-run baseline needs posts at bay boundaries, but gate and corner framing should be reviewed separately for the real design.
