Why this planning detail matters

Driveway aggregate is not always one uniform material from subgrade to surface. Base stone and surface gravel can have different sizes, compaction behavior and supplier weight conversions. Combining them into one average depth can produce an order that is hard to split correctly between materials.

How to measure or choose the starting value

Measure driveway length and average width, or divide changing widths into sections. For each planned course, enter its own compacted thickness. Calculate cubic yards for that layer before moving to the next. If the design has shoulders or turnouts, measure those additional footprints separately.

Adjustments that change the estimate

Compaction, soft subgrade, crown, drainage details and rut repairs can increase actual aggregate use. The correct layer design depends on loads, soil and local practice, so this material guide does not prescribe structural thickness. It only shows how a chosen layer plan changes quantity.

How to use the number before you buy

Create a shopping line for each aggregate type. Use the supplier’s tons-per-yard conversion for each product, because the base stone may not weigh the same as the surface material. Keep delivery minimums and truck capacity as purchasing constraints outside the geometry.

Example: same driveway, two layers

A 1,200 sq ft driveway with a 4 in base and 2 in surface course has twice the geometric volume in the base layer. If the aggregates have different densities, the ton ratio will not necessarily be exactly two to one.
