Why this planning detail matters

Gravel projects often confuse three quantities: square footage, cubic volume and tons. Area tells you the footprint, depth converts that footprint to volume, and density converts volume to weight. Keeping those stages separate lets you change aggregate type without remeasuring the site.

How to measure or choose the starting value

Measure the path, bed or parking footprint and divide irregular shapes into simple sections. Use the designed or planned finished thickness for the layer. Convert inches to feet before multiplying by square feet. If the project has multiple aggregate layers, calculate each layer as its own material rather than averaging depths together.

Adjustments that change the estimate

Compaction, subgrade rutting, edge loss and uneven excavation can increase loose material needed to achieve a finished compacted layer. Different aggregate gradations have different bulk densities, especially with moisture. Supplier ton-per-yard guidance is more useful than a generic density when you are ready to order.

How to use the number before you buy

Use the volume result to compare bulk-yard and ton pricing. If ordering by weight, enter the supplier’s density or conversion. Keep any compaction/order allowance explicit.
