Find a defensible diameter
Measure across the circle through its center. If you are unsure of the center, compare several cross measurements. Similar results support the circular assumption; large differences suggest an oval or irregular shape.
Use area for surface materials
Mulch coverage, surface finishes and circular pad planning begin with square area. Do not use circumference when the material covers the inside footprint.
Use circumference for edge materials
Edging, borders and some forms follow the perimeter, so circumference is the relevant linear measurement. Stock lengths still need whole-piece rounding.
Do not force irregular curves
A perfect circle formula can create false precision on free-form beds. Measure the actual edge or divide the area into shapes that better fit the site.
Field check for round areas
For a real garden bed or patio, take two or three diameter measurements across different directions. If they are close, average them only if the shape is intended to be circular and the variation is small. If one direction is clearly longer, the area may be oval or free-form and a circle formula can understate or overstate material needs. Mark whether your project needs inside area, outside edging length, or both. This distinction prevents a common mistake where a circumference value is carried into a square-foot material calculation or an area value is used to buy linear edging.

A 10 ft diameter bed has a 5 ft radius, about 78.5 sq ft of area and about 31.4 ft of circumference. Mulch quantity starts from area; edging starts from circumference.
