Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Radius

diameter ÷ 2

Half of the measured diameter.

Area

π × radius²

Square units for the circular footprint.

Circumference

π × diameter

Linear distance around the edge.

Waste, depth or packaging are applied later.

How to measure this project

Measure the widest straight line that passes through the center of the round area. If the center is not obvious, take more than one diameter measurement in different directions. Large differences indicate the shape is not a true circle and should not be forced into this formula.

Before you buy materials

The circular area is useful for round patios, planting beds and pads, while circumference can help with edging. Do not order materials from the geometry alone: depth controls bulk volume, cuts control paver waste, and edging products require piece or roll rounding. Transfer the correct result to the relevant material calculator.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is diameter the same as circumference?

No. Diameter is a straight line through the center; circumference is the distance around the circle.

Can I use this for a round mulch bed?

Yes for area. You still need mulch depth to convert that area into volume.

What if the circle is slightly oval?

If diameters vary meaningfully, treat it as an ellipse or split/measure the footprint another way rather than assuming a circle.
