Use the product’s real stock length

Rigid edging may come in fixed pieces while flexible systems come in coils. Enter the format you will actually buy.

Piece count creates joints

Seven rigid pieces can create several joints even if the linear footage is sufficient. Joint placement may matter around corners and visible edges.

Surplus length is not always waste

A remaining section can be saved for repairs or reused on another bed if it is long enough and compatible.

Accessories can scale differently

Stakes, connectors and corner pieces may be specified per joint, per foot or at fixed intervals. They need a separate accessory takeoff.

Build a simple joint and accessory count

Once the whole-piece count is known, sketch the sequence of pieces around the bed and count the actual joins, ends and corners. A closed loop of seven pieces can have a different connector requirement from seven pieces split across several isolated beds. Some systems use dedicated corner pieces; others bend in the field. Stakes may be spaced by linear distance rather than by piece count. Keeping these accessories in a separate list prevents the edging-length calculation from pretending to be a complete system takeoff. It also makes supplier substitutions easier because the stock length can change without losing the accessory assumptions.

Seven 8 ft pieces provide 56 ft. The 3.1 ft nominal surplus does not eliminate the need to plan joints and connectors, and it may or may not be reusable depending on cut locations.
