Overlap is a product/project rule
Different fabrics and applications may specify different seam treatment. The quantity model should accept the chosen allowance instead of prescribing one universal overlap.
Strip direction changes seam length
Roll width determines how many strips cross the bed. Rotating the layout can change seam count and offcut reuse even when total area is identical.
Plant openings do not always save roll area
Small openings are often cut in the installed fabric rather than subtracted from the purchase area. Large excluded zones can be measured separately.
Fabric is not appropriate everywhere
Quantity math does not decide whether landscape fabric is suitable for a planting system, soil-management approach or drainage condition.
Lay out seams around real site features
Trees, shrubs, irrigation boxes, drains and hardscape edges can force fabric strips to start or stop in inconvenient places. A simple percentage allowance cannot predict every seam. Sketch the major obstacles and decide where full-width strips can run continuously. Avoid creating many tiny patches merely to reduce nominal waste, because the installation method may require secure overlaps and fastening. If the product manufacturer limits where seams can occur or how they are secured, follow that guidance. Use the calculator allowance as a material buffer after this layout review, not as a replacement for the layout itself.

Example: 4 ft roll strips
A 12 ft wide rectangular bed fits three nominal 4 ft strips before overlap. If the strips must overlap, the effective covered width is less than 12 ft, so the area allowance or strip layout must account for that loss.

Usually not for small openings because the fabric is installed and cut around plants; large excluded areas can be handled separately.
