Choose the right tool
The floor or finish footprint is best represented by two or three non-overlapping rectangular zones and exact exclusions, with optional package coverage.
Use Square Footage for one rectangle, Room Area for one rectangular room plus perimeter, or a shape-specific calculator for triangles/circles.

Measure the room as a small set of non-overlapping rectangles. Mark each rectangle on a sketch and record its length and width from the same finished surfaces you will use for material planning. If a projection, island, hearth or built-in truly removes floor coverage, measure that exclusion separately instead of shrinking one of the rectangles by guesswork. For curved or diagonal boundaries, split the shape into practical rectangles or use a more specialized geometry method and record the approximation.
Use the net measured area as the stable project basis. Add cut/layout reserve only after the geometry is confirmed, then divide by the actual package coverage of the selected flooring, underlayment, tile or other sheet/box product. A whole-package count is a purchasing reference; orientation, pattern matching, board length, lot matching and unusable offcuts can still change the final order.
