2 × (length + width)

Models four rectangular bed walls.

Wall courses

target wall height ÷ installed board face height, rounded up

Uses the actual exposed/stacked face height.

Linear stock target

perimeter × courses × bed count × (1 + allowance)

Keeps cut/defect reserve explicit.

Whole boards

linear stock target ÷ stock length, rounded up

Rounds only to sold stock pieces.

How to measure this project

Measure the planned bed footprint consistently at the same reference line, especially if corner posts or joinery change the outside dimensions. Record the inside growing dimensions separately from the lumber takeoff if board thickness matters to soil volume. For multiple identical beds, verify one set of dimensions in the field before multiplying the count.

Before you buy materials

Use the actual installed board face height, not just the nominal board name. Stock length should match the material you intend to buy. A pure linear-foot calculation cannot optimize every cut pattern, so use the visible allowance for end trimming and unavoidable offcuts, then sketch cuts when stock lengths and bed sides interact closely. Posts, fasteners, caps and reinforcement are separate scope items.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool include corner posts and fasteners?

No. It estimates wall-board stock only so posts, brackets, screws and other hardware remain visible as separate design choices.

Why round the course count up?

A partial final course still requires a board course. Verify the installed face height so the rounded course count represents the product you will actually use.

Can I use outside dimensions?

Yes if you stay consistent, but soil-volume calculations may use different inside dimensions. Keep the measurement basis documented.
