Keep all three dimensions consistent

Length, width and height must describe the same physical volume. Mixing an excavation dimension with a finished fill dimension produces a result that looks precise but describes no real space.

Convert volume after calculating geometry

Calculate in one consistent unit system first. Conversions between cubic feet, cubic yards and cubic meters should happen after the base volume is known.

Understand why materials differ
