Depth controls volume
A small change in depth applies across the whole project area, so it can change cubic yards substantially. Use the specified installed or compacted depth.
Density is not universal
Dry loose sand, damp sand and different gradations can have different bulk densities. A generic density is only a planning assumption.
Volume and weight are different order paths
Some suppliers quote cubic yards; others quote tons. Keep both results visible and use the one that matches the supplier.
Compaction belongs in project assumptions
If a project specification requires a compacted layer, the loose delivered quantity may need an allowance. Use project/supplier guidance rather than assuming the calculated compacted volume is the delivered volume.
Match the density to the ordering condition
Ask whether the supplier quotes density for loose, compacted, dry or typical delivered material. If your project specification gives a compacted depth but the supplier delivers loose sand, the geometric compacted volume may not equal the truck volume. Moisture can also affect scale weight without changing the intended installed volume. Record which condition the density represents and avoid mixing a compacted volume with an unrelated loose density. When the supplier sells by volume, density may be unnecessary; when the supplier sells by weight, it becomes one of the most important assumptions in the estimate.
