How to measure this project
Measure diameter through the center of the circular section and height or depth perpendicular to that section. Decide whether the relevant dimension is inside, outside or form diameter before entering it. For tanks and pipe capacity use the internal bore; for concrete columns or excavation geometry use the physical form or hole dimension that defines the material volume.
Before you buy materials
The formula assumes a straight right circular cylinder with constant diameter. Tapered holes, bell-shaped footings, domed tank ends and irregular excavations need separate geometry or segment calculations. When the result will be converted to bags, gallons or supplier units, apply the appropriate product yield or purchase allowance in the downstream material calculator rather than altering the geometric volume.
