How to measure this project

Measure the trench along its developed route rather than using a property-line shortcut. Record width at the actual excavation width and use an average depth only when the profile is reasonably uniform. If depth changes substantially, split the trench into segments and total the separate excavation volumes. Keep over-excavation for structures, bell holes or access zones as separate measured sections instead of hiding them in one oversized width.

Excavation volume is not the same as bedding, drainage stone or final backfill quantity. Loose spoil may occupy more space after excavation, so a swell factor can help plan temporary stockpiles or haul capacity. The correct swell depends on actual soil and field conditions; enter a value supplied by the project, contractor or local experience rather than treating the example as universal. Verify excavation safety, utility locating and trench requirements independently.

Does this calculate required trench depth?

No. Depth is an input from the project design or applicable requirements.

Why is loose spoil larger than excavation volume?

Excavated soil can occupy more space after it is loosened. The entered swell percentage models that planning difference.

Can I use one average depth for a sloped trench?

Only when the profile is reasonably uniform. For major depth changes, calculate separate segments and add them.
